Cubs are starting from scratch after Contreras’ critical comments appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Exactly a week after tearing his squad apart for lack of effort, Cubs wide receiver Willson Contreras spoke the loudest with his bat in a comeback win in the ninth inning on Saturday on the road.

We talked about this last week and they got my point, Contreras said. It’s already over.

On Saturday in Arizona, a game that ended with two strikeouts early in the ninth, Contreras capped a four-length rally with a two-run home run. The Cubs won 4-2.

That’s not going to stop what’s happening between now and the July 30 trade deadline. In fact, that process has already started, when the Cubs traded Joc Pederson to the Braves on Thursday.

Contreras, who is eligible to play in free agency next winter, will certainly generate interest from other teams in the next two weeks.

But, on the contrary, it could have underlined the value of Contreras for a club which has an interest in extending it.

He’s a big part of this team and I think every time he’s there we have a chance to win every game, said Adbert Alzolay, starting Saturday.

A week ago, in 12 hours, Contreras tore the squad apart following a 6-0 loss to the Cardinals, in which he assumed they were “distracted” as the star break.

Manager David Ross controlled the damage as the break came early due to rain. By the time they got back together after the break, the liquidation was underway as the Cubs opened a series against the worst team in baseball.

We were just starting from scratch, Contreras said of the fallout from last weekend. I said to my guys, let’s start from zero. Let’s do it, because I believe in this team. I believe in the talent that we have.

None of them can know how many will be left after July 30.

I was looking forward to competing and competing until the last, like today, Contreras said. When were in competition, were hard to beat.

This is the state of mind that I try to create with my teammates and with this team in particular. I believe in each of my teammates.
