The city offers to help the team form a 45-year tax hike district and fund most of the costs of improving infrastructure at the site by issuing bonds. That’s a lot for the Ace. The city wisely wavered at the wild demand from team president Dave Kavals for a second tax district that would affect properties spanning a mile-long strip of land nearby. It would be irresponsible.

Sadly, what seems to drive Kaval and billionaire team owner John Fisher isn’t just the pursuit of a good business deal, but greed. They have already tricked Alameda County supervisors into selling them half of Colosseum County where they currently play at a greatly discounted price without requiring the team to stay in town. Apparently, they think city officials are fools too.

If the team continues to insist that they want to leave the Colosseum, they would have to give up their property to release this site for a single developer. It would be a sign that the team really cares about the welfare of the community.

And if the team insist they need a waterside stadium, they should stop threatening to move to Las Vegas, which, the last time we checked it out, didn’t has no waterfront site to offer. Kavals’ specifically childish teams should come to an end.

Fortunately, so far city council, city negotiators and Mayor Libby Schaaf have not given in. It is Kaval who continues to insist that a waterfront stadium is the only alternative, while sending signals through Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred that Oakland is also expected to sell the team half of the city’s Coliseum.

For the Howard Terminal deal, the city is now asking the team to commit to staying in Oakland for just 25 years, though the exact time that clock would start running is still open for negotiation. Tuesday’s question is whether city council members will approve the non-binding framework proposed by staff to enter the next phase of negotiations with the team. If they do, it will be up to the Ace to decide whether they want to go ahead or leave.
