HC: only the HR and CE departments cannot be blamed for the deplorable state of the temples

The authorities, regardless of the heritage value of various temples, had licensed and leased temple property as well as temple pragarams and verandas to traders to continue commercial activity by selling unrelated items. nor with the temple and the worshiping public, observed the Madurai magistracy of the Madras High Court.

A division chamber of Judges TS Sivagnanam and S. Ananthi observed that these stores have practically become malls, even shopping centers. Despite the burning of the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple, people have not learned their lesson. If so, the sad plight of the temples cannot be avoided, the judges said.

Regarding the maintenance of the temples, it was undoubtedly the duty of the HR and CE department to maintain the temple and to preserve the heritage value of the temple for posterity. But, the HR and CE department was not alone to blame for the sad situation of the temples.

Due to the lack of funds in several temples, the pujas were not even performed once a day. Temple priests were not paid on time. Tenants were one of the reasons to blame for the temples left without sufficient funds. Several cases were filed by them claiming that they had the right to remain in temple property indefinitely by paying a pittance as rent or license fees, the court said.

The court heard the motion filed by K. Suresh. He called on the authorities to take action to restore and conduct pushpanjali rituals at Adikesava Perumal temple in Kanniyakumari district. The court ruled on the petition, directing the petitioner to seek redress by sending a request to the competent authority.
