Mercedes Lewis Hamilton says he has no reason to apologize

Lewis Hamilton said he had no reason to apologize after Christian Horner accused him of putting Max Verstappens’ life in danger following their 190mph crash at the Grand Prix de Grande -Brittany Sunday.

Hamilton made a stunning comeback, passing Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc with just two and a half laps to go to win his home race for the eighth time on a scorching afternoon at Silverstone in front of 140,000 spectators.

But the 10th lap will be remembered for the explosive collision of Hamilton’s first lap which saw Verstappens end the afternoon in the barriers and then in the hospital from where the Dutch driver accused his rivals of being disrespectful and unsportsmanlike.

When asked if Hamilton’s move from verstappen to Copse put the life of his star man in danger, enraged Red Bull boss Horner replied: Of course. His actions put the safety of another driver at risk and to me that is unacceptable.

Every Grand Prix driver knows that a movement in this corner, one of the fastest in Formula 1, is a huge risk.

You don’t put a wheel inside without having huge consequences. We are just lucky today that no one was seriously injured.

What angers me the most is just the lack of judgment and the hopelessness in this move. It has never been turned on.

Lewis is a world champion who has won seven titles. It is a mistake of amateurs and a desperate mistake. Max is beaten and bruised. It is the biggest accident of his career.

Stewards believed Hamilton was primarily responsible for the incident. He was fined 10 seconds which he served at his pit stop at 27th out of 52nd.

The Briton went from second to fourth, 12 seconds behind Leclerc, before making his way in front of the Monaco Ferrari via Copse in 50th out of 52nd.

Hamilton jumped out of his Mercedes and jumped over a barrier, before waving the Union flag in front of the crowded stands.

But Horner added: I don’t see how Lewis can derive any satisfaction from a victory when he hospitalized his teammate and driver. It is disappointing and extremely annoying.

He was wound up after (Saturday) Sprint, added to the crowd and the atmosphere, and he made a huge error in judgment. If Max had passed through that corner, Lewis wouldn’t have seen him today.

He’s lucky the same didn’t happen with Leclerc. If Leclerc had not run alongside, exactly the same incident would have prevailed.

Verstappen was taken to hospital for precautionary checks and a CT scan after the accident. The 23-year-old tweeted: Glad I agree.

Very disappointed to be out like this. The penalty imposed does not help us and does not do justice to Lewis’ dangerous movement on the track.

Watching the celebrations while still in the hospital is disrespectful and unsportsmanlike behavior, but we continue.

Responding to criticism, Hamilton, who reduced his championship deficit from 33 points to just seven, said: I really have nothing to say to Christian. The victory does not seem hollow.

I don’t think I can apologize for anything. We are there in the race.

I have heard that Max is in the hospital and it definitely worries me. None of us here want to see an injured driver. This is never my intention and I really hope he is okay, and I will contact him after that to check that he is okay.

We are in a battle and this year he has been very aggressive and I had to concede and avoid an incident with him. As you saw (Saturday), once it’s in the clear, it goes too fast. So when an opportunity presents itself, I have to try to seize it.

I do not agree with the commissioners but I take my chin penalty and I continue my work. I won’t complain about it.

Everyone is going to have a different opinion and I don’t really care what people think so I just do what I do and I’m really thankful for today.
