CHESTER, England (Gray News) – An English woman has been sentenced to life for murdering her husband by pouring boiling water mixed with sugar over him. She was reportedly angry at allegations that he sexually assaulted children when she assaulted him.
Corinna Smith, 59, was sentenced to life on July 9 with a minimum of 12 years in prison, according to a Cheshire Police press release. She was found guilty of pouring boiling water, mixed with sugar, on her husband, Michael Baines, 81, while he was asleep in July 2020.
Baines suffered burns to 36% of his body and died a month later, despite medical treatment.
Smith killed her husband Michael in such a painful and cruel way. Throwing boiling water on someone while they’re sleeping is absolutely horrible, Chief Detective Inspector Paul Hughes said. The sugar put in the water makes it vicious. It becomes thicker and stickier and penetrates the skin better. It left Michael in agony.
The day before the attack, Smith was made aware of allegations that Baines had sexually abused children, the Chester Standard reports. The claim included an allegation relating to Smith and Baines’ son, Craig, who committed suicide at the age of 25 in 2007.
The allegations have not been proven, but officials say Smith believed them to be true when she attacked Baines.
While the context provides an explanation of why you did what you did, I’m sure you know it can’t provide an excuse. Your actions cannot begin to be justified, no matter what you think your husband did, Judge Amanda Yip said during Smiths’ sentencing.
A jury found Smith guilty of murder after a five-day trial in June.
