Anti-Muslim racism revealed in AHRC report

“This report is confusing to read, but I must say I am not surprised by its findings, and I expect many Muslims to say the same. Discrimination is very real and its consequences too.

“Over the past decades, Muslims have suffered significant discrimination in Australia and have been the target of severe racism and bigotry in the community, the media and in politics.

“Disastrously, anti-Muslim hatred led an Australian to murder 51 innocent Muslims in Christchurch two years ago. But we can see anti-Muslim hatred and intolerance throughout our community and we have to fight it with whatever we have.

“Australia must urgently re-engage in the fight against racism and Islamophobia, especially in the face of the resurgence of a far right. We need to invest in and roll out a national anti-racism agenda, tougher extremism and hate speech laws, and much better representation of people of color in public life.

“It did not escape me that this report recommended better portrayal of Muslims in Australian media the same week it was revealed that Channel Seven had chosen a woman with a history of toxic Islamophobia and racism in an upcoming television series. This saga was a strong reminder of the Islamophobia and racism sustained in the Australian media, ”she said.
