NASHVILLE, Tenn. The plot of the seemingly endless Zobrist family saga has thickened in the run-up to next month’s divorce lawsuit between former Chicago Cubs public service star Ben Zobrist and his ex-wife, Julianna. Court documents relating to the trial were made public, revealing several explosive details via a detailed Chicago Tribune article.
The high-profile divorce centers around Julianna’s alleged affair with former Zobrist family pastor Byron Yawn, who is also Ben’s former business partner. Ben took a long leave of absence from the Cubs in 2019, the last year of his playing career, to sort out family issues surrounding his wife’s separation.
Ben eventually returned to play for the Cubs and racked up about two months of service, which earned him $ 4.5 million prorated to his $ 12.5 million salary. However, Ben alleged that Julianna had “coaxed” him back into action at the end of the 2019 season, a claim that was made in response to Julianna asking for an additional $ 4 million due to loss of income due to the leave.
Julianna seeks a fair distribution of the assets of the Zobrist family, which is estimated to be worth between $ 24 million and $ 31 million. Ben asks to keep at least 60% of the assets and hopes to avoid paying the additional $ 4 million. Julianna’s reasoning for asking for the additional $ 4 million is that “[Ben] has essentially gone from the very top of its game to neglect, resulting in a massive loss of income. “
Blaming her ex-husband, who “intentionally and voluntarily stopped working” for the loss of income caused by her leave, Julianna and her lawyer received a response from Ben’s lawyer calling her request “totally absurd”. Julianna accused Ben of “failing to preserve the marital assets,” but Ben made a substantial allegation himself.
According to court documents, Julianna spent $ 30,000 on a retirement party for Yawn in December 2018, when Yawn was leaving the ministry. Ben also accused Julianna of getting drunk at the party, held at the Zobrists Farm in Nashville, Tennessee, and of dancing lewdly with Yawn in front of her family and friends.
Ben’s memo describes the party scene, saying, “In fact, as the husband finally found out, the wife had already left her husband and was ‘in love’ with Pastor Yawn.”
The memo accuses Julianna of incurring at least $ 700,000 in “excessive and unnecessary expenses” and cites her lack of income as part of Ben’s justification asking for the majority of the family’s assets. Conversely, Julianna’s note asserts that Ben has “perfectionist tendencies” that have led him to be a “domineering” and “controlling” spouse.
“Throughout their marriage, the husband struggled with mental health issues including manic tendencies, depression, anxiety, melancholy and suicidal thoughts,” says Julianna’s note.
Ben basically accused Julianna of being a spendthrift, alleging that she spent an average of $ 24,000 per month mostly on travel, clothes and gifts in 2018. However, the most important allegation of all involves Ben’s lawyer. blaming Julianna for causing Ben mental anguish by having an affair with Yawn.
“It was Ms. Zobrist, by having an extramarital affair and confessing the same to her husband, and not revealing the true extent of her affair, that caused him such extreme mental distress and hardship that he has. was unable to complete his long and successful career in the way he had hoped and planned. “
Zobrist retired after the 2019 season, marking an inglorious end to an otherwise highly successful Cubs tenure and MLB career. The Zobrists initially filed for divorce from each other in May 2019, but the allegation of the case was only recently made public. Acrimonious, to say the least, the divorce has played out in the public eye, and the proceedings are likely to be rather caustic and filled with even more explosive allegations.
