CITY OF PANAMA, FLA. (WMBB) The Bay District School System is investigating an email sent from a student’s email account Tuesday morning at around 5:30 am The email contained racist and discriminatory language and was sent to students and teachers in the district before being removed by the school system.
It was definitely a hatred beyond anything any of us can even imagine, said Bay District Schools Superintendent Bill Husfelt. It was something that you didn’t want to wake up in the morning and check your emails and see this.
More than 100 people saw the email before it was deleted, Husfelt said. As the school system pursues other projects, officials have ensured that its system is secure and has not been hacked.
None of our systems were compromised by (the email), Husfelt said. Again, I’m no expert, but I was pretty sure whoever discovered it had found someone’s password or something, it was that sort of thing.

An internal investigation found that no data from the district had been breached, BDS said in a press release. However, emails like the one sent on Tuesday have become more common, said Jim Scantlin, executive director of management information systems at BDS.
It’s a constant thing, the bad actors and the people who want to do it are constant, said Scantlin. And what we do every day is try to come and try to make sure we were as safe as possible.
BDS also intends to work with law enforcement to try and locate the person who sent the message. The district hopes legal consequences will arise if the person is found, Husfelt said.
I believe it is a crime, which has been done, said Husfelt. Well, keep investigating and let’s go and deliver a $ 500 reward that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the person who did this.
