Jeff Bezos has defended himself against critics who argue that billionaire tycoons like him are better off focusing on issues around the world rather than embarking on space travel missions.
The former Amazon CEO gave an interview to CNN on Monday as part of a media blitz that he and Blue Origin set out to promote the company before soaring into space later this week. The launch comes after Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson made his own inroads into commercial space travel earlier this month when he and his crew performed a test flight at the edge of space.
As CNN’s Rachel Crane asked Bezos and her team a wide range of questions for New Day, she noted that “there has been a chorus of critics saying these spaceflights are just walks for the rich and that you should be spending your time and money and energy trying to solve the problems here on Earth. So what do you say to these critics? “
“Well, I say they are mostly right. We have to do both, ”Bezos replied. “We have a lot of problems here and now on Earth and we have to work on it, and we have to always look to the future. We have always done it as a species, as a civilization. We have to do both.
Bezos went on to say that Blue Origin’s mission is to conduct operational space travel so that one day it can become comparable to commercial air travel.
“If we can do this,” he said, “then we’ll build a road to space for the next generations to do amazing things there, and these amazing things will solve the problems here on Earth… So the real answer is, yes we have to do both.
