CHARDON, Ohio (WJW) – Geauga County Public Health reached a benchmark on Tuesday.

“For the first time, we have finally crossed the 50% mark in Geauga County. I think being able to say that the majority are vaccinated is a good thing, ”said Health Commissioner Tom Quade.

Quade’s celebration was cut short on Tuesday as the Ohio Department of Health reported more than 740 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. This is the largest single-day increase in almost two months.

“So when we’re at 50 percent, 50 percent of the population is protected and therefore we see this increase,” Quade said.

“I’m not surprised. It’s two weeks after July 4th,” said Dyan Denmeade, director of nursing at the Lake County General Health District.

Another factor that could push the numbers up is the delta variant, according to the Lake County General Health District.

“So we’ve had a delta variant since at least March,” Denmeade said. Lake County ranks second in the state for vaccinations.

“Where we see our residents getting the delta variant is in college age. College age and people in their twenties are where we see it right now, ”Denmeade said.

“We weren’t expecting it so soon,” said Donna Skoda, health commissioner at Summit County Public Health.

According to Skoda, most of those admitted to local hospitals have not been vaccinated.

“We will be monitoring a lot more of these cases. This is the only way to know if they say they are vaccinated or not. However, I can tell you that the people we interview are much more unvaccinated, ”Skoda said.

Currently, Ohio’s vaccination rate stands at 48%.
