Mount Vernon Comptroller speaks on state of emergency

The Mount Vernon Comptroller blames the town’s mayor for the unpaid bills that led to a state of emergency, which means the town’s fire and construction vehicles have been taken out of service.

NEW YORK – The streets of Mount Vernon appear to have been cleaned up, but the drama is still unfolding.

“It’s a crisis and we’ve been operating in crisis mode probably for a decade,” Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said.

Mayor Patterson-Howard still claims nearly half a million dollars in maintenance bills went unpaid because of the city comptroller.

Neighboring cities, including New York, sent DPW trucks this week to help clean up the trash. But a number of Mount Vernon’s construction vehicles are still out of service, including police cars and a fire engine.

Our FOX 5 NY cameras were cleared into the Department of Finance in Mount Vernon on Wednesday as we attempted to reach Controller Deborah Reynolds inside her office.

Reynolds says, “And one day of the year she plays a hoax in Mount Vernon and accuses the Controller. It’s ridiculous. She has to do her job and grow up.”

Reynolds says the mayor is responsible for paying the bills. The same defense she gave during the administration of former Mayor Richard Thomas, but when asked if she was at fault in this state of emergency, she said none of it was her responsibility .

The mayor says that for now the garbage will be collected regularly, as long as there are enough trucks for the roads. Garden waste is still hanging until the end of the month at least.
