LOS ANGELES (AP) Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer appeared in court Friday to challenge an extension of a protective order sought by a woman who says she strangled her to the point where she lost consciousness and hit her during two intercourse earlier this year.

Lawyers for Bauer and the woman revealed in a brief morning hearing that they intend to call witnesses and discuss the order in what amounts to a trial that is expected to last three days.

The court hearing is expected to resume on Friday afternoon, but a judge may decide to postpone the proceedings. A temporary restraining order keeping Bauer away from the woman has been issued until the hearing can take place. A judge could decide to extend this for several weeks or years.

Bauers’ appearance on Friday was neither required nor expected. It is not clear if he will speak. Restraining order hearings are generally brief and lawyers often appear without their clients.

The launchers ‘agents Jon Fetterolf and Rachel Luba disputed the allegations and Fetterolf said his clients’ interactions with the woman were completely consensual.

Major League Baseball put Bauer on paid leave on July 2 under the joint policy on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse adopted by MLB and the players’ union in 2015. The leave has been extended until ‘to July 27.

Police in Pasadena, California are also investigating allegations of possible criminal charges.

The woman, from San Diego, said in court documents seeking the order that she and Bauer met on Instagram when she tagged him in a photo as he pitched in a game against the Padres in May.

She then went to his home in Pasadena and had sex which started out as consensual but turned violent without his consent, according to the documents.

The second incident, in which she alleges that Bauer hit her repeatedly, left her with two black eyes, a bloody swollen lip, bruises and severe scratches on one side of her face. She included photographs showing the injuries.

The documents indicate that she requested the order because Bauer repeatedly called and texted her after the second meeting to ask if she was okay, and she did not want any further contact with him.

The Associated Press generally does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted.

Bauer agreed to a three-year, $ 102 million contract to join his hometown Dodgers earlier this year after winning his first Cy Young with the Cincinnati Reds last season. Bauer is 8-5 with a 2.59 ERA in 17 starts this season.
