MOSCOW, November 7. / TASS /. Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend a summit of leaders of member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to be held by teleconference on November 12, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov told TASS on Sunday.

“Yes, it is planned,” Peshkov said when asked if the Russian leader was expected to address the APEC summit on November 12.

According to APEC on its website, the summit of union leaders will be chaired by the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinta Arden. This year, APEC held an emergency meeting of its leaders via teleconference on July 16th to discuss measures to combat the coronavirus pandemic and address its consequences.

APEC includes 19 countries. Among them are 12 founding states (Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, USA, Thailand, Philippines, South Korea and Japan), as well as China (which joined in 1991), Mexico and Papua New Guinea (1993), Chile (1994) and Russia, Vietnam and Peru (1998). In 1991, two Chinese territories also joined the APEC – Xianggang (Hong Kong) and Taiwan.

Given the specificities of the union, which includes both states and territories, APEC members are traditionally referred to as “economies”.
