WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House on Friday called on Russia to escalate tensions with Ukraine, saying it had immediately expressed concern about the military build-up in Moscow.
“We also continue to have serious concerns about Russia’s military activities and its harsh rhetoric towards Ukraine, and we urge Moscow to de-escalate tensions,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.
President Vladimir Putin issued his own warnings https://www.reuters.com/world/pentagon-ukraines-defense-chief-calls-world-unity-deter-russia-2021-11-18. On Thursday, he said the West was taking instructions from Russia not to cross its “red lines” too frivolously.
On Friday, the Kremlin said the remarks were in response to provocative NATO actions, including Ukrainian armaments. Ukraine opposes the increase in Russian military activity near the 1208 mile (1944 km) border it shares with Russia.
Despite the growing list of differences, the Kremlin has maintained high-level contacts with Washington and has repeatedly spoken of a possible summit between Putin and US President Joe Biden following the resumption of their initial meeting in Geneva in June. which Putin said made room for improving ties.
