LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Art by a renowned photographer is on display at the Chandler Hospital at the University of Kentucky.
Artist and Louisville resident Sarah Hoskins has spent more than twenty years photographing historic African American communities in central Kentucky for her series “The Homeplace”. His work is now on display at the British Chandler Hospital.
The Illinois native was herself a patient at Chandler Hospital nine years earlier after a serious car crash with her daughter. She hopes the exhibit will bring comfort and healing to those who see her, both physically and emotionally.
“You are there for a reason. It’s because you’re hurt or sick, or have a loved one going through something. With my images of this project, I am actually saying that “The Homeplace” is comfort. No matter how long you’ve been gone, you can always come back and be greeted with open arms, ”Hoskins said.
The African American communities Hoskins photographed have been around for seven generations, making them an important piece not only in Kentucky history, but America as well.
“It’s seven generations of people that went through, you know after slavery and southern Jim Crow, and you know, rose up and thrived on all of these hardships. The communities are pretty amazing if you ask me. I think we have to recognize it. It’s not just African American history and culture, its American history, ”Hoskins said.
Hoskins hopes his photographs could foster empathy, understanding, and perhaps even healing for someone who may be sick or injured.
“We have to understand each other as much as possible and if my photos can, you know, fill in some gaps, then I did something important. What if a person responds well or if it brings some kind of positive feeling to a situation? hospitable when someone is going through something, so I’ve done enough, ”Hoskins said.
The exhibit is on the first floor of Chandler Hospital and will be on display until October.
