Typhoon Chanthu headed for Taiwan and southern China, rapidly gaining speed and strength ahead of planned landing

Typhoon Chanthu has intensified rapidly over the past 36 hours, moving from a tropical depression to a severe typhoon, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, with maximum wind speeds of up to 233 kilometers per hour (145 miles per hour). Chanthu is likely to turn into a super typhoon in the next few hours.

Given the storm’s track, it’s still unclear whether Chanthu will first pass over Taiwan before hitting southern China or narrowly missing the island. Either way, at its current rate, the storm is expected to make landfall on Saturday or Sunday.

Typhoon Chanthu is just one of two dangerous weather systems sweeping the western Pacific. Severe tropical storm Conson made landfall in the Philippines overnight Monday and will pass through the country before heading north towards the Chinese island of Hainan.

Conson sees winds of up to 112 km / h (70 mph). According to CNN Philippines, While warning signals have been hoisted in the storm’s path, no major damage has been reported so far.

Chanthu will likely be the strongest storm to hit Taiwan or mainland China since Typhoon In-fa in July, which worsened already severe flooding in southeast China.

In total, the economic losses due to the typhoon and floods amounted to over $ 14 billion, according to Chinese state media.
