Russia tests submarine-launched Tsirkon hypersonic missile for the first time

The Ministry of Defense, which tested the firing of the Tsirkon missile of a warship in July, said the Severodvinsk submarine fired the missile while deployed in the Barents Sea and hit its chosen target.

Low-quality video footage released by the ministry showed the missile firing up from a submarine, its glow lighting up the night sky and illuminating the water’s surface.

“The test firing of the Tsirkon missile from a nuclear submarine was deemed successful,” the ministry said.

New Satellite Images Show Russia May Prepare To Test

Some Western experts have questioned how advanced the new generation of Russian weapons are, while acknowledging that the combination of speed, maneuverability and altitude of hypersonic missiles makes them difficult to track and intercept.

In July, portions of images showing Russia’s new advanced S-500 surface-to-air missile system appeared to have been deliberately blurred to make scrutiny in detail more difficult.

Putin announced a series of new hypersonic weapons in 2018 in one of his most belligerent speeches in years, claiming they could strike almost any point in the world and escape a US-built missile shield.
