Heavy rains are expected to hit northern England after flash flooding in the south.

Dozens of flood warnings were in place across the UK on Tuesday, after commuters captured footage of London buses plowing floodwaters on Monday evening.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain in parts of northern England until 10 p.m.

Meteorologist Grahame Madge said the north-east of England could experience up to 50mm of rain throughout the day, even higher levels than those recorded in the south overnight.

A heavy truck was captured, making huge ripples in flood waters on the A4 between Hyde Park Corner and Knightsbridge tube stations in central London on Monday evening.

Nearby St Jamess Park was hit by 35mm of rain in just six hours after midnight, the Met Office said. About 26 mm of this precipitation was recorded in just one hour.

Storrington in West Sussex also experienced 30mm between midnight and 6am, while Market Bosworth in Leicestershire had 29mm.

Madge said north-east England could see up to 50mm of rain on Tuesday, as cars were seen plowing deep floodwater in Whitley Bay, Tyneside.

He said: Precipitation is now declining over much of the country, but the low pressure system is heading towards north-east England and south-east Scotland. The weather will still be a little rainy elsewhere but the main showers are converging on the northeast.

Forecasts for the next few days in England show that high pressures are setting in, resulting in calmer weather.

Strong winds were also expected to worsen the rain on the east coast, while the western areas were likely to experience sunny periods and scattered showers.

The Environment Agency issued 54 flood warnings for areas where flooding was possible, and four flood warnings across England.

Parts of London, Birmingham and Cumbria have been covered by flood warnings, with disruption likely to homes, travel and electricity.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency has issued flood warnings for Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Scottish Borders; Natural Resources Wales had one in place along the country’s north coast.
