The Calgary Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating links between two men after one was killed and another was sent to hospital following a shooting outside of a downtown nightclub early Sunday morning.

Police were called to Junction Underground just before 2:45 a.m. for reports that someone had been shot outside the bar, located on 8th Avenue in the southwest.

When the police arrived, they found a man in his thirties who was in “serious medical distress”. He was sent to hospital in a life-threatening condition, where he died shortly after, police said in a statement.

While the man was transported to hospital, officers secured the scene and searched the area for suspects. As police searched, a second man in his 30s arrived at Foothills Medical Center with gunshot wounds, police said.

Calgary police have been called to the hospital and believe the man is linked to the shooting. He remains in hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries, police say.

“It is very early in the investigation and we are working to determine what happened and how the two men are related,” police said in the statement.

The identity of the victim can only be released after an autopsy, which is scheduled for early next week, police said. More information will be shared once known.

As of 10:45 a.m. Sunday, 8th Avenue Southwest, between 5th Street Southwest and 6th Street Southwest, is blocked to traffic so police can continue to investigate.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the CPS non-emergency line at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime stoppers.
