Three snow leopards died at Lincoln Children’s Zoo in the US state of Nebraska from complications from Covid-19.

The zoo made the announcement in a Facebook post, describing the deaths of the three leopards – named Ranney, Everest and Makalu – as “really heartbreaking.”

“We all cry together,” the zoo added.

The zoo began treating leopards and two Sumatran tigers for the virus last month. The zoo said the tigers, Axl and Kumar, had “apparently fully recovered from their illness.”

The zoo said it remains open to the public and continues to take precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19 to humans and animals.

He added, “We will continue to follow the guidelines of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV) and the CDC to keep our animals, staff and community safe.”

Zoos across the country, including the St. Louis Zoo and the Denver Zoo, have battled outbreaks of Covid-19 among their animals.
