New Year’s Eve time to be ‘exceptionally mild’
Brits have been warned to keep their winter coats on hand as there could be more snow on the way in January after a balmy New Year’s Eve.
December was a volatile month, with storms and freezing temperatures mixed with exceptionally warm weather.
And that is expected to continue over the next few weeks, as mercury is expected to rise in the coming days, which could lead to the hottest New Years Eve on record before more snow is on its way.
The Met Office said it was officially a “White Christmas” this year, although snow was not widespread across the country on December 25, and it looks like winter temperatures will return in January.
Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden said: “More snowfall is likely, particularly in the first half of January.”
WXCharts maps also show temperatures early next week will be near freezing on Monday and Tuesday for much of England and Wales while in the Scottish Highlands they could drop to -3C .
Prior to that, the Met Office said temperatures could reach 15 ° C on New Years Eve, surpassing the previous temperature record of 14.8 ° C for December 31 set in 2011.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: “The record is 14.8 ° C on New Years Eve and that was in 2011, temperatures appear to be 14-15 ° C so it’s possible that temperatures are that value. “
Mr Dewhurst also said the weather throughout this week will be “balmy”.
He added: “We’re going to see above average temperatures for the rest of the week across the country for this time of year.
The week promises to be mild with temperatures rising in the coming days
“The average UK temperature at this time of year is expected to be around 7-8 ° C. In the future we are looking at highs of around 12-14 ° C, locally maybe 15. ° C in one or two places, so it will be well above average. “
But Mr Dewhurst warned the British would not bask in unusual sunshine.
“The sky won’t be blue all week,” he said.

“There are going to be clouds at times as well as strong winds and heavy rain, especially in the north and west of the UK.
“This is all due to the low pressure systems crossing the Atlantic and bringing in milder air and humid weather.”
He also pointed out that although there were no weather warnings in place, parts of the UK will be reinforced by gale force winds later in the week.
“Gales are sometimes possible in the south and west during the week,” he said.
UK forecast for the next 5 days Today:
Many areas start out cloudy with rain or showers, some heavy. Becoming drier westerly with clearings but strong southerly winds. Patches of freezing fog are slowly dissipating from north-west Scotland if not sunshine after a frosty start.
Tonight:
Frost and scattered fog in the north. Further rains and strong winds moved north-easterly over much of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and later south-west Scotland. Becoming very mild in the southwest.
Wednesday:
Rain continuing to the northeast, some heavy in the northwest, where maybe very windy for a while. Cloud breaking over parts of the south, central and east becoming clearer and very mellow.
Outlook from Thursday to Saturday:
Exceptionally soft. Disturbed with episodes of rain and strong winds, but also drier and brighter interludes. Strongest and most persistent rain over the Western Hills.
