A trainee soldier was racially abused by a British Army instructor who called him “Paki Rambo” – a nickname used in the satirical film Four Lions about a group of inane jihadists, a court martial has heard. Rifleman Kasem Salem, originally from Egypt, was also reportedly dubbed a “carpet rider” by Cpl Robert Mehers while undergoing basic training.
Salem, 20, told the court he was a Muslim who moved to the UK eager to follow his father into the military, but felt “marginalized” by the alleged comments.
Prosecutor Captain Daniel Lawlor said Salem started his infantry training in April 2019 with 5 rifles, after leaving Egypt for the UK in 2012 with his father.
He told the Bulford, Wiltshire court that Mehers was an instructor at the Catterick Infantry Training Center in North Yorkshire.
Salem said he was treated equally in his first week, but reportedly felt he began to be marginalized after a meeting with instructors, in which he spoke at length. talked about his culture and his religion. Salem told the court, “I decided to join the military because my dad and dad served, so it’s a tradition. I was very open about my religion, my faith and my family… we talked about my beliefs and my culture.
He said Mehers was initially very understanding and went “the extra mile”, making sure he set aside times for prayer and that all of his nutritional needs were met. He said he greeted him with “Hello, how are you?” in Arabic. There were also “cultural understandings discussions” with the recruits, where they could ask questions on sensitive topics.
But Salem said he began to be called “Paki Rambo”, “Egyptian” and “Carpet Rider” and felt isolated because of his religion and education.
The court heard that a second instructor, Sgt Christopher Tolley, allegedly learned Arabic for “Your mother is a bitch” so he could curse Salem in his native language.
It was also claimed that Tolley told Salem that his father was not allowed to attend a parade because he might be a suicide bomber and that “his car might contain a bomb.”
But Tolley’s attorney, Ed Wylde, told the hearing that Salem called himself “Paki Rambo” after he and other recruits watched the Chris Morris Four Lions satire, in which one of the characters uses the phrase.
Wylde said he even ran around the accommodation block “pretending to be a terrorist” and used “Allahu Akbar” – “God is the greatest” as a “rallying cry” when he attacked mannequins. training during a bayonet drill.
He said the young soldier was “the driving force behind the comedic variation of this stereotype”.
Tolley and Mehers have both been charged with ill-treatment of a subordinate, but Tolley was found not guilty after Salem’s testimony and Wylde’s observations.
The court ruled that the evidence against Tolley was not strong enough for a case to be decided and ordered the board hearing the case to return a verdict of not guilty.
Mehers denies the mistreatment charge and the trial against him continues.
