Last week, Warren Elementary Center celebrated creativity, collaboration, and courage.
It all started with a dot.
Thursday was International Dot Day — founded on the children’s book “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds.
Students were encouraged to wear clothes with dots on them. They read the book with Librarian Laura Demers. They made dots in Katie Keeports’ second grade classroom. And they made digital art using dots in STEM.
In the book, the main character thinks she can’t draw, STEM Teacher Mandi McBriar said. Her teacher suggests she draw a dot. And her art grows from there.

McBriar had students from Rayme Scalise’s second grade classroom make computer art using dots.
There was a challenge.
“Most of these students have never used a mouse before,” Scalise said.
Modern devices mean students’ day-to-day technology is based on touchscreens.
So, McBriar gave them a few moments and a little instruction in mouse use. After that, they were on their own.
And, like the art in the book, their artworks grew from single dots.
