A natural gas fireplace ignites a fire in the wall of a Saskatoon home

Saskatoon firefighters were called to a house in the 1000 block of East 11th Street Saturday night after the wooden block around a natural gas fireplace caught fire.

Crews were called to the home around 8:39 p.m. Dec. 31 with reports of the smell of natural gas, according to a news release.

When workers arrived, they found a small fire in the wall around the chimney and slightly elevated carbon monoxide levels.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and ventilated the building. No one was injured in the incident and residents of the home were able to stay, firefighters said.

An investigator estimated damages from the incident at around $5,000.
