Resident upset over mess of garbage left for weeks

A North End resident wants to see the City of Winnipeg pick up a pile of trash they say they’ve left for weeks.

The dumpster behind the St. Johns Avenue apartment is full of trash that overflows onto the floor. Harold Schmidt lives nearby and says the trash is piling up.

“Well, look around, the trash is strewn all over the alleys and all over the street,” he told CTV News, adding that the trash had been there since before Christmas. “It looks terrible. It doesn’t look good for the city of Winnipeg.”

Schmidt said he tried to call the collection company listed on the trash can, but they told him to call the city. Late last week, Schmidt said he reported it to the city and was told he would take note.

The City of Winnipeg said it could not arrange an interview, but said in a written statement it cannot say whether or not the property is currently signed to the city or private contractors.

“The City can only collect and monitor collection services for multi-family properties that have requested and been approved for service,” the statement said. “Multi-family properties are responsible for providing their own front-end trash cans. Any additional waste beyond the capacity of their trash cans is the responsibility of the landlord.”

The city has asked residents to report any concerns about trash or illegal dumping to 311.

Com. Ross Eadie (Mynarski) was unavailable for an interview Tuesday, but told CTV News he was aware of the issue.
