Among Us fans will be familiar with the game’s MedBays, which appear on various maps. Here, players can perform tasks like scanning themselves (although you don’t do that on the airship, if I remember correctly).
The MedBays are all fairly simply designed, with beds and other items you might expect to see. Nothing out of the ordinary, unless you count the little beans running here and there trying not to get tricked.
However, it turns out that these simple room designs were unintentionally controversial, thanks to the inclusion of a red cross on the wall of The Skeld’s MedBay.
Among us, hide and seek.
A red cross symbol is associated with medical personnel. So associated, in fact, its inclusion actually violated the Geneva Conventions Act.
This legislation stipulates that “no one shall be permitted, without the authorization of the [Secretary of State], to use for any purpose any of the following; that is to say:
“The emblem of a red cross with vertical and horizontal arms of equal length on a white background and entirely surrounded by it, or the designation “Red Cross” or “Geneva Cross”.
Obviously, Among Us developer InnerSloth was unaware of this when designing their MedBays. And, perhaps, Among Us would still have that little red cross adorning its MedBay wall to this day if it hadn’t had such a spike in popularity in 2020.
However, thanks to Among Us’ meteoric rise in popularity during the various lockdowns of 2020, the game garnered a lot of discussion and attention – which ultimately caught the attention of those who were watching anyone breaking the law. on the Geneva Conventions.
As such, the developers of InnerSloth were tricked into changing the color of their MedBay cross. Sharing this story last night, the team had the following to say: “Oops”. You can see what the MedBay Cross looked like before and after in the image below.
A small change with a bigger meaning. Image InnerSloth/Among Us.
Aside from that minor issue, however, Among Us seems to be doing just fine. An update late last year added a new hide-and-seek mode and the ability to pet pets. All in all, not bad for a game that nearly died out in 2019!
