Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s warning on Sunday that China could provide lethal aid to Russia could actually lead Beijing to cancel those plans, retired four-star Army general Jack Keane said on Sunday.
Blinken said in the interview that aired Sunday that China was “seriously considering” sending ammunition and weapons to Russia as the war against Ukraine entered the one-year mark.
Fox News analyst Keane told “Fox News” host Shannon Bream: “I agree that the government is starting to expose the information that they have, probably in the intelligence community, that China is preparing to provide some deadly military assistance to Russia .” Sunday News. “
“I think coming forward and exposing — and I’ll go a step further and tell them — what we think they’re trying to offer, after it’s publicly exposed, China will likely back off.”
Keane called China and Russia “strategic partners” and said “we shouldn’t be surprised that China wants Russia to succeed.”
“Remember, China didn’t condemn the invasion. They didn’t condemn it as illegal. They didn’t stand up against the genocide and the war crimes that were going on,” Keane said.
“Of course, China has been buying as much Russian oil as it can and helping them deal with the sanctions imposed on them.”
The U.S.-China relationship comes amid tensions after the Biden administration shot down a Chinese surveillance balloon earlier this month amid concerns that Beijing could be fueling Russia.
Blinken postponed a planned trip to China amid the controversy, but met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, where he raised the issue of deadly support for Russia.
“I made clear the importance of not crossing that line, and the fact that it would have serious consequences for our own relationship, and aside from what’s happening with the balloon in China, we don’t need to,” Blinken said.
