(February 28, 2023) – With less than 17 months to go until the 2024 Paris Olympics, the US Olympic sailing program is in crisis mode.

When the US Sailing board decided to restructure the team on February 24, it led to the resignation of Paul Cayard, who was hired in March 2021 as executive director of US Olympic Sailing.

Today, other resignations followed.

• High Performance Coach James Lyne, hired by the team in May 2022, has resigned • Performance Director Leandro Spina, who has been recognized for the success of the Olympic Development Program, has resigned. • Coach Senior Coach Luther Carpenter, the longest serving and among the most successful coach in Olympic history, has resigned. recently worked with kites and skiffs, quit.

In what appears to be a show of support for Cayard, those resignations essentially dismantled Team USA’s high-performance leadership group. In McKee’s letter to the US Sailing Board of Directors, he expands on his view of the progress that was happening:

“The Olympic Department Performance Team has been focused and united in our efforts to bring our American athletes to the top of our sport. I have been involved in Olympic sailing for 40 years as a competitor, Olympian and coach, and I am convinced that we were on the right track to help our athletes achieve their goals. I strongly believe in what we were all building together, especially our development of cooperative training with our dedicated athletes. I would also like to thank Paul Cayard for his inspirational leadership.Athletes have truly felt and appreciated his vision and support, not only professionally but also personally.

As a search committee was created to fill Cayard’s roles, the list of vacancies grew a bit longer.
