The first season finale of The Last of Us drew the show’s biggest audience yet.
Sunday’s finale averaged 8.2 million viewers across all platforms for HBO, up slightly from 8.1 million the previous week and the opening night high for the nine-episode season. . According to HBO, the first six episodes of The Last of Us have averaged 30.4 million viewers since the January 15 premiere, with the first episode closing in on 40 million viewers.
The 30.4 million figure, if it were to hold as more returns arrive over the last three episodes, would mean The Last of Us is bigger than House of the Dragon, which averaged 29 million. cross-platform viewers as it airs in the late summer and fall of 2022.
The 8.2 million viewers for Sunday’s finale are 74.5% higher than the 4.7 million who watched the series debut in January. A large majority of the show’s audience watches on HBO Max: not counting the Super Bowl Sunday episode (which aired two days earlier), only about 12% of total first-night viewers of the show (846,000 out of 6.84 million through episode eight) watched at 9 p.m. on the main cable channel HBO. On-air reruns and DVR playback also make up a portion of the total, but most viewers watch on HBO Max.

Thrones ended a year before the launch of HBO Max, and its viewership shifted a bit more towards the cable channel: around 27% of its total audience (just under 12 million) watched the first broadcasts on the linear channel, with the rest coming from reruns, DVR, and the point-of-sale streaming options at the time, HBO Go and HBO Now.
