It was nice the last two Sunday nights to get a full night’s sleep without dreaming of turning into a mushroom monster. The Last of Us season finale was emotionally damaging, so the franchise was kind enough to give me some time to heal. But that time has ended after just 15 days, as The Last of Us Part I is now available to play on PC.
For many fans, like me, this will be the first time The Last of Us has been a video game, instead of an HBO TV drama. Smart timing! For anyone returning to the game since its re-release last September, there’s also a new speedrun mode, so you can get through the story quickly. (For me, any mushroom virus apocalypse should be set to speedrun mode.) I’m not sitting while the mushroom horde comes to give me a big kiss.
Previously, almost everything made by Naughty Dog, the video game studio behind The Last of Us, was a PlayStation exclusive. We’re talking about games you probably had no idea were also developed by the same creative team as Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, and Uncharted, the last of which saw a movie release in 2022 starring Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland. But if you wanted to play The Last of Us before, you either had to have the original game from its 2013 release on PlayStation 3 or shell out a boatload of cash on the new PlayStation 5 to play it. With an official release on PC and Steam, the remastered game is now available for anyone, anywhere. Don’t get mad that I chose to play video games all spring with my two best friends, Joel and Ellie.
