The Idol is a Hollywood-based music industry drama exploring the rise to stardom through the eyes of Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp). While navigating a rebrand after a nervous breakdown, Jocelyn meets mysterious club owner Tedros (Abel Tesfaye) who urges her to unlock parts of her personality in order to thrive in the industry.
The cast includes not only Depp and Tesfaye, but also stars Dan Levy, DaVine Joy Randolph, Rachel Sennott, Troye Sivan, Jennie Ruby Jane and Blackpink’s Jane Adams, to name a few.
The series came with its fair share of controversy following its premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, drawing a mixed reaction from critics who heralded it as everything from “Depp’s best performance yet” to “corrupt”.
But the reactions are only part of the drama attached to the show, as The Idol has also had its fair share of behind-the-scenes issues.
Amy Seimetz was previously on board as series director but, in April 2022, left the project after apparently 80% of the series was complete.
A statement from HBO (via The Hollywood Reporter) read at the time, “The creative team at Idols continues to build, refine and evolve its vision for the show and it has aligned with a new creative direction.
“The production will adjust its cast and crew accordingly to best serve this new approach to the series.”
As recently as March 2023, Rolling Stone alleged that some scenes in the production resembled a rape fantasy and that the drastic delay in the series’ release was due to Levinson taking over as director and was abandoning the near-completed $54-75 million project to rewrite and remake the entire series.
The idol is available to watch weekly on Mondays on Sky Atlantic and the NOW streaming service in the UK, sign up for Sky TV here.
