England assistant coach Paul Collingwood has admitted his side were frustrated at taking just five wickets on day two of the first Test when they gave up four golden chances.
Jonny Bairstow failed to crush Cameron Green on Moeen Ali when he had nothing (he then made 38), and dropped Alex Carey on the 26th, on Joe Root. Perhaps most serious, before Root missed a Moeen chance to fire Carey, was Broad beating Khawaja on 112 on a no-ball.
Collingwood accepted that England’s failure to try their luck made it Australia’s day.
It’s a little frustrating, Collingwood said. It’s another great day for Test cricket. We would have liked to take these risks, [we were] probably half an inch from taking all their wickets tonight.
We weren’t far behind, but we’re still in a magnificent position in this game, with an 82 lead. That wicket isn’t going to get better as we go.
