Britain braces for further industrial action this month as young doctors belonging to the British Medical Association (BMA) stage a five-day strike and the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union introduces new strike dates, threatening to further disrupt rail services.
Senior doctors also shot down stethoscopes for 48 hours in July and Aslef, the train drivers’ union, took action without a strike calling for a six-day ban on overtime, which is nonetheless likely to lead to cancellation of trains. by beleaguered commuters.
Months of negotiations between the government and unions representing workers in professions in contact with the public have failed to find a solution to ongoing disputes over pay and working conditions in a number of sectors, leaving the NHS no choice but to cancel routine appointments and treatments and travelers stuck on platforms.
The most recent rail strikes in late May and early June made life difficult for parents during the half-term week and for those attending specific summer events such as the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, the final of the FA Cup in London and the Derby at Epsom, as trainline employees and station staff have sought to demonstrate the importance of the services they provide.
And these were just the latest cases of industrial action bringing the UK to a standstill after a long winter in which thousands of public sector workers took to the picket line.
From nurses and teachers to civil servants, postal workers and driving instructors, workers have been demanding wage increases in response to the skyrocketing rate of inflation and the current cost of living crisis.
While some of those disputes have since been resolved, many more threaten to rumble amid few signs of progress.
BMA co-chairs Dr Robert Laurenson and Dr Vivek Trivedi have urged the Rishi Sunaks administration to come up with a new offer on top of the 5% pay rise offered so far to prevent what promises to be the longest single walkout of doctors in the history of the NHS.
Even now, the government can avoid our action by coming to the table with a credible offer to restore wages, they said.
But common ground looks likely to remain elusive after Health Secretary Steve Barclay accused the BMA of walking away from the table.
Meanwhile, RMT general secretary Mick Lynch has told The Independent that further railway strikes are quite likely as long as his talks with government negotiators remain deadlocked.
Here’s a list of all the major walkouts that have been announced so far for July 2023, with more likely to follow.
