US presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis has been involved in a car accident.

The governor of Florida, a candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, was involved in an accident in Tennessee on Tuesday but was not injured, his campaign press secretary said.

“This morning, the Governor was in a car accident while on his way to an event in Chattanooga, Tennessee,” Bryan Griffin said.

“He and his team are unharmed.”

His representatives did not say who was driving the governor or give details of the incident, but said he was going ahead with his planned event.

Mr. DeSantis was scheduled to appear in central and eastern Tennessee on Tuesday,

The 44-year-old is considered former President Donald Trump’s main challenger in the Republican contest.

Mr DeSantis trailed Mr Trump, with 51% of respondents in a poll last month saying the ex-president was their top choice and just 22% choosing his younger rival.

However, Mr. DeSantis is seen as the only candidate with a realistic chance of defeating Mr. Trump.

As governor of Florida, he molded himself as an anti-reawakening warrior, calling on many of the same people who support his rival.

Despite his lead in the polls, Mr Trump’s extensive court cases could erode some of his support before next summer when the decision will be made on who Joe Biden will face in November 2024.
