The most developed country in Africa plans to vaccinate 67% of its population by March 2022 to obtain herd immunity.
The news comes as coronavirus cases across Africa have increased by 25% over the past week, raising fears that a third wave is well underway for the continent of 1.3 billion people.
Alan Winde, South African Prime Minister of the Western Cape, said his province had already entered a third wave. Our current projections are that this third wave will be less severe than the second wave, but we can’t be sure at this point, he told a press briefing on Thursday.
South Africa is the only African country to record more than a million cases of Covid-19 and it has four times more than the second most affected country, Morocco.
During the initial outbreak of the virus, South Africa was plunged into one of the most severe and lasting lockdowns ever seen in the world. Authorities placed South Africa in a Level 2 lockdown in late May after months of low transmission.
However, authorities are now calling for tighter restrictions, including a ban on unnecessary interprovincial travel and stricter enforcement of restaurant restrictions. The latest Level 3 lockdown also included a complete ban on the sale of alcohol and the closure of land borders.
