(WHDH) A hospital worker from a COVID-19 ward used a deceased patient’s bank card to purchase snacks from a vending machine, police said.
Ayesha Basharat, 23, from Birmingham, England, took an 83-year-old woman’s card after she died at Heartlands Hospital earlier this year and used it to buy crisps, candy and soda, according to the West Midlands Police Department.
Just 17 minutes after the woman’s death, police said Basharat took the card and made six purchases from the machine.
The card was then canceled and the police arrested Basharat in hospital.
Basharat reportedly told investigators that she found the card on the ground and mistook it for her own card when paying.
At a court hearing on Wednesday, Basharat admitted to being charged with theft and was sentenced to two five-month prison terms.
