Video of a car being pulled into a deep sinkhole within seconds outside a property complex in Mumbai has gone viral as heavy rains hit India’s richest city.
The incident happened on Sunday in the Ghatkopar West region of Mumbai, capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra, when the ground on which the car was parked appeared to suddenly collapse.
Mumbai police said there was a well under the place, which had been half covered by residents and turned into a parking lot. The cement collapsed from the heavy rains and the car sank, police said.
Although the car’s lights appear to be on in the video, no one was inside the vehicle at the time and there were no injuries, local authorities said.
Refusing to take responsibility, the local civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the incident happened at a private residential complex and had nothing to do with it.
He said there was a well in the company complex and half of it was covered with BCR (reinforced cement concrete). The local body said that residents of the company used to park their cars on this cement slab, and preliminary information showed that a car parked there was submerged.
BMC said the residential complex has been urged to take security measures to ensure the incident does not recur.
Dr Kiran Doshi, the owner of the car, 67, said he was informed of the incident by the man washing cars belonging to residents, according to Indian express.
Dr Doshi said: He set off an alarm, after which I rushed to the spot and saw the car sinking into the well. Then I shot a video.
Residents of the housing complex said it was built over 80 years ago and the well was covered around 40 years ago.
The car was eventually pulled out of the pit by authorities using a crane, nearly 12 hours after being submerged.
Mumbai has witnessed relentless rains in recent days after the onset of the monsoon, causing flash floods in several parts of the city. India’s meteorological department continues to issue severe weather alerts for the city and predicts it will receive “very heavy rain” on Monday.
