When their request was rejected, the statement said: “The police threatened our managers and left, only to return the next day to harass further and put pressure on our teams on the ground with baseless arguments.”
On Friday, the restaurant’s 19 staff and managers were arrested and detained by police for nearly seven hours overnight, the statement said. Restaurant staff were forced to leave their kitchens and patrons unattended, “with our fryers always on”, while police said they refused to respond to a “request from a very high level special guest” , according to the press release.
A police officer has since been arrested and an investigation is underway, a spokesperson for the Lahore City Police Bureau said on Tuesday.
“No one is allowed to take justice into their own hands. Injustice will not be tolerated,” the tweet said. “All will be punished.”
Police have not confirmed the number of officers involved in the investigation, nor the details of the incident.
Johnny & Jugnu’s marketing manager Saman Bashir said the incident was very upsetting for the team, but praised the swift action taken to suspend those involved.
“We spoke to the public about what happened, and within two hours we might have received a response from the authorities,” she said. “We’re glad people stood up to support us, it’s the silver lining.”
