The Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) has started its first investigation in response to a request from a UK industry. The case was opened on Monday, June 21.

TRA will investigate whether aluminum extrusions are dumped into the UK by companies from the People’s Republic of China.

Aluminum extrusions are commonly used in the manufacture of heavy equipment, such as components for infrastructure projects such as mining, oil and gas, chemical and refinery equipment. They are also found in windows, doors and railings, cars, buses and trains, as well as air conditioners, personal watercraft and medical equipment.

Trade Remedies Authority chief executive Oliver Griffiths said:

This investigation into the potential dumping of aluminum extrusions from China is the UK’s first new trade remedy case. We encourage all parties with interests in the UK aluminum extrusion market to contribute to our investigation to determine whether dumping has taken place and whether the remedies are the right answer for the UK economy.

TRA received a supported request from UK producers whose collective production constitutes at least half of the UK’s total production and concluded that the request includes sufficient evidence to warrant a full investigation.

The TRA will now seek information from all interested parties in order to establish whether aluminum extrusions have been dumped into the UK, whether this has harmed UK industry and whether it would be in the interests of the United Kingdom that measures be put in place to mitigate this prejudice. .

The TRA was established as an independent body earlier this month, following the passage of the Trade Law. See more information on launching the authority.

UK industries concerned about imports can submit requests for a new trade remedy as of January 2021. These requests are being reviewed by the TRA to see if there is a need for an investigation. This will be the first survey conducted by TRA in response to a request from a UK industry. Anti-dumping measures are one of three types of trade remedies along with countervailing subsidy measures and safeguard measures that deal with sudden and unforeseen flooding of imports authorized by the World Trade Organization (WTO). The materials under investigation in this case are rolled, drawn, extruded, forged or cast aluminum extrusions exported from the People’s Republic of China, which are in the form of bars, rods, profiles, tubes. and pipes.
