Two injured survivors of the attack in the small town of Togoga detailed the incident to a CNN station on the ground after being transported to hospital in Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, by Red Cross ambulances.

Medical sources told CNN that ambulances were initially able to reach the scene from Mekelle and brought back five patients on Tuesday afternoon.

Red Cross ambulances were waiting on stand-by after being refused permission to go to the village of Togoga.

However, a dozen ambulances were then prevented from leaving to help the wounded as they reached the outskirts of Mekelle, with the military accusing them of going to help the Tigray Defense Forces, the sources said.

A team of medics who tried to reach the scene in the evening were shot by the military, eyewitnesses added.

The bomb hit a market on the 33rd “Martyrs Day” in Tigray – a date marking the Hawzen massacre that killed more than 1,000 Tigrayans in a Hawzen market near the end of the Ethiopian Civil War. Ethiopian army spokesman Col. Getinet Adane told CNN that reports of an aerial bombardment were “false news”.

He said the military would never target civilians by air or land. He accused people in hospitals of acting “drama” in an attempt to overshadow a peaceful election.

“The small town health post along [with] residents’ properties, was vandalized in February by Eritreans. There is not even a first aid worker in the city, let alone a functional health post, “he added.
