TORONTO – Premier Doug Ford is due to make a transit-related announcement in Toronto on Wednesday.
He will be joined by Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney, Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma and Mayor John Tory.
Speaking at a press conference on COVID-19 on Wednesday, Tory said today’s announcement would mark the first steps taken to start construction of the Bloor-Danforth subway line to Scarborough.
This will finally and after many years of debate and engagement and various other things, provide a link to jobs and opportunities for the people of Scarborough who have experienced historic underinvestment in public transit, a- he declared.
TTC staff recommended earlier this year that the Scarborough RT line be decommissioned and replaced with buses by 2023, seven years ahead of the scheduled completion date of the Line 2 extension. the TTC voted unanimously in favor of the recommendations set out in the report a few days later.
In May, Ottawa announced $ 12 billion in funding for five rapid transit projects in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton, including the Ontario subway line.
About $ 10.7 billion of the investment will fund construction of the four projects included in the Progressive Conservatives’ $ 28.5 billion transit plan, which includes the Scarborough subway extension to three stops , the Ontario line metro, the Yonge metro extension to Richmond Hill and the planned Eglinton Crosstown extension from Mont Denis to Renforth Drive.
The event is scheduled to take place in Scarborough at 1 p.m.
CTVNewsToronto.ca will broadcast the announcement live.
