Mumbai: A worker, who was seriously injured after a 1.5-foot-long rod pierced her chest, underwent successful surgery at Sion hospital last week.
The 29-year-old was injured after a sharp rod fell from the upper floors of a construction site in Vikhroli where she worked and penetrated her chest. The incident took place on June 19 as the woman and her husband were doing their work at the site.
We carried out a complex operation which lasted more than three hours. We not only had to be careful when removing the rod so as not to injure its organs, but we also had to be very careful with the anesthesia, which is usually given with the patient lying on their back or stomach. However, this patient could not be held on her back or stomach because the rod had penetrated her chest, said Sion Hospital Dean Dr Mohan Joshi. The incident happened around 3 p.m., after which she was rushed to Rajawadi Municipal Hospital in Ghatkopar, where she was transferred to Sion Hospital at around 6 p.m.
The woman’s health is stable after a week, authorities at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray congratulated the team from the departments of surgery and anesthesia over the phone, Dr Joshi added.
