What should CU Buffs, CSU Rams do now?

If the transition of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC has taught us anything about college athletics, it’s this: When the bottom line is the lowest dollar, it’s every school for itself.

Given this commandment, what is the best move for CU and CSU if the second round of conference reorganization is really ahead of us? Break down options:

CU Buffs: What now?

Option 1: Hold on

Pros: Pac-12 feels relatively safe (ish) and Big 12 is a minefield despite Larry Scotts ’damage to the former. If you predicted that in 2019, half laughing at Stillwater.

Cons: If the Big 12 breaks down, the landscape becomes free for everyone. Pac-12 may seem comfortable now, but USC is a football-crazy wild card and seeing peer powers like Sooners and Longhorns guarantees may be the last incentive for Trojan men to consider life as an independent Notre. Option 2: Talk to Big 12

Pros: Hi, Plan B never hurts.

Cons: Manhattan, Kansas. In February.

Option 3: Talk to Big Ten

Pros: Nebraska. Also money. Lots of it.

Cons: 10 am kicks. Like every week. Serious online money is in the East, but the soul of the CU and the Buffs alumni and donor community live in the mountainous and Pacific time zones. Nonetheless, if Big Ten starts chasing a group of Pac-12 schools for a merger, it’s best to go on that sauce train.

CSU Rams: What now?

Option 1: Call Big 12

Pros: Rams has a stadium that is more than snuff. Bonus: The league has the option to attach a flagpole to the mountains.

Cons: Texas schools do not recruit Colorado children in the same way that Colorado schools recruit Texas children. The football brand is far behind the AAC stable, like Cincinnati, Memphis and UCF, so the Big 12 brass may not call you back.

Option 2: Call Pac-12

Pros: Remember: The worst thing they can say is “No.”

Cons: None. Well, other than the whole “No” part.

Option 3: Call AAC

Pros: They are hungry. They are looking. They reportedly received a blessing from ESPN to push. Why should everything in East Carolina be fun?

Cons: If the Big 12 breaks down and the AAC gets the first snippet, you’re closer to the back of the line than the front.

Option 4: Hold on

Pros: More time to follow Log episodes.

Cons: Conference USA is a terribly secluded place today.
