Celtics More experienced playmaker, scorer in Dennis Schroder

Quite a bit of pressure was lifted from the shoulders of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum on Friday afternoon as the Boston Celtics added another offensive weapon to the mix by signing veteran point Dennis Schroder.

The move came 11 full days after starting the free office, but it was worth the wait. Schroder was one of the best players available on the market, and he should settle for significant scoring and game-building on the Celtics team, which needed a player with that kind of experience and skill.

The Celtics also increased the depth of the front field on Friday by bringing back veteran center Enes Kanter, who previously played for the team in 2019-20. In addition, they filled one of their two-way seats by adding summer league top Max Hauser, a beginner’s wing that knocked down six 3-points in Friday night’s victory over the Orlando Magic.

In addition to Schroders and Josh Richardson, two weeks before it should help fill in the gaps left by out-of-season starts from Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker. Schroders spent the first five seasons in Atlanta, where he developed his reputation as a blatant competitor. His last season in Atlanta in 2017-18 was his most impressive, with an average of 19.4 PPG and 6.2 APG, 3.1 rebounds per game and 1.1 stocks per game on average.

The German descent then moved to Oklahoma City, where he had the unique opportunity to back up two Hall-of-Fame-bound guards in consecutive years, first with Russell Westbrook in 2018-19 and then with Chris Paul in 2019-20. He gained such valuable experience and at the same time was one of the most productive sixth men in the league. In fact, he led all the bench makers in the 2019-20 season with 18.4 PPG and finished second in the NBA’s sixth-man vote of the year behind winner Montrezl Harrell.

Before the final season, Schroder was switched to the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he played alongside two other Hall of Fame players in Anthony Davis and LeBron James. The biggest difference this time around was that Schroder got to experience his experience as a beginner. He received an average of 15.4 PPG and 5.8 APG.

Schroder may find himself in a similar role this season as he prepares to fit alongside another Brown and Tatum star pair. Celtics basketball operations chief Brad Stevens was supposed to build around the two, and their new point guard should be a strong complementary piece.

Schroder is a changeable, fast striker who is able to drive a basket. Last season, he made an average of 13.3 runs per match, which would have placed him first in the Celtics in that series ahead of Tatum (12.4) and Brown (10.5). He decided to forward 42.9 percent of these stations, a trend that should promise good to Tatum and Brown, who are likely to receive many such propeller dishes. And when he gets errors from these times, Schroder changes his free kick with an effective 83.1 percent career cut.

Cs should also benefit from Schroder’s landing when he is at the best stage of his career at the age of 27 (turns 28). However, he has played as a top player since the age of 23, when he had a transition period in Atlanta averaging 17.9 PGG and a career-best 6.3 APG. Since the start of the season five years ago, Schroder has been one of only 13 players in the NBA, averaging at least 17 PPGs and 5 APGs. The other 12 players have been All-Stars games.

The Celtics may not ask Schroder to be an All-Star, but they hope he competes like one. And that shouldn’t be a problem, given what he wrote to Celtics fans in his Instagram story after making an agreement with Boston: I’m proud to announce that in the 2021-22 season, I’m playing with the Boston Celtics. Celtics fans should be as eager to welcome Schroder as he is to wear his beloved uniform. He’s an extra goal scorer and a game scorer they need, he’s an experienced veteran who has played alongside numerous future Hall-of-Famers, and he’s just the kind of player who can complement both Brown and Tatum as they rise.
