At this time of year, unless you trade, as we just saw with Julio Jones, there’s not much reason for Dynasty rankings. Most of these changes will take the form of changes to the 2021 forecasts. They matter, probably more than anything else, but they’re also just part of the equation, so they don’t usually shake things up too much. Therefore, many of the investments below look pretty similar to last month. Two exceptions are Antonio Gibson and Trey Sermon.
I could make a case of moving Gibson up or down after the last couple of weeks. First, we received reports from Washington, which used Gibson more as a receiver in OTA, and Ron Rivera spoke in anticipation that his return would take a big step in the second season. Gibson had an impressive rookie runner, but his production in 2020 was disappointing, considering how good Gibson was passinpitäjänä University. The reports give me hope that Washington was just trying not to surpass their newcomer and that he would see a greater share of the goals they set for JD McKissic in 2020.
Just these news collided Gibson’s forecast for the year 2021, which in turn gave impetus to the dynasty of the rankings. But the pace would have been even higher if there was no other news that Gibson is still dealing with a toe injury that limited him in 2020. All running backs are at risk of injury, but you’d rather have your run back in a healthy June. If this continues to bother him at the start of camp, we need to discuss it longer.
So far, the news is positive. The larger role should last longer than the toe injury. This, combined with how tight my rankings are at 14-20, made Gibson jump from five places in the latest rankings. If I had a “win-now” team, I would definitely want Austin Ekeler over him, but Ekeler is at the age where we should expect the value of his dynasty to fall when this season is over, if not earlier.
While it was a mixed bag for Gibson, there is no doubt in which direction Sermon’s arrow points. With Jeff Wilson’s injury, Sermon seems to have started the year with another player on the team assuming he can beat Wayne Gallman. The fact that he shares with Raheem Mostert, who has his own problems staying healthy, only adds to Sermon’s appeal.
We expect the 49ers to once again be one of the most effective runners in football, so 10-12 playing a game in this attack is more valuable than most. History has shown us that almost anyone who comes into contact with this crime can succeed, and Sermon should not be different.
I suspect some are questioning how close the Sermon is to Javonte Williams, and it is worth noting that there is at least one level break between them. The sermon is so close to Damien Harris because he is worth the dynasty to Williams, more on that later in the week as I update the trade chart. I will also update where I would take Williams and Sermon in the rookie sketch as well.
Below are updated Dynastian running back rankings. These are all, so they may not reflect the exact placement of your situation. If you rebuild, you should value young people more than these rankings do. If you’re a challenger, a back like Derrick Henry or Chris Carson is more valuable than where he ranks below.
