Michael K. Williams, star of the HBO series The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, has been found dead in his New York apartment, at the age of 54.

According to the New York Post, the actor was found by law enforcement on Monday afternoon (September 6). The newspaper reported that drug paraphernalia were also found, indicating a possible overdose.

They also note that his nephew found Williams in the apartment’s living room.

Williams rose to fame on HBO’s The Wire, playing the fearsome stickman, Omar Little. Barack Obama once described Little as his “favourite character” and “the strongest and worst man on the show.”

His break in the entertainment industry came through his work as a dancer, working and touring with the likes of Madonna, Tupac and George Michael.

A four-time Emmy-nominated actor, Williams had roles in The Night Of, When They See Us, and Lovecraft County.

Williams has also appeared in a number of acclaimed films including Inherent Vice, 12 Years a Slave, and The Road.

The cause of death was not revealed.
