The Hampshire field hockey loses its defense debut

NORTHFIELD It may not have been the result Hampshire’s regional field hockey team hoped for at the season opener against Pioneer, but it was an encouraging start to a program that started just a year ago.

Pioneers Riley Thayer’s first quarter goal was a lone shot that found its way into the back of the cage for both teams when the Panthers won 1-0.

The scores did not show how the Raiders were able to control the ball and keep the pressure on the Panthers ’defense.

I’m happy with the way we played, Hampshire coach Deena Lashway said. I feel like we controlled the game, but we couldn’t pull it together in a circle. Well work on it. I’m really hopeful for the rest of the season after this game.

It was a defensive battle throughout the 60 minutes, with Pioneer getting just three shots to finish, while Hampshire managed just one. The Raiders had a tie at the end of the last quarter of the match, but Silvia Basteks fired a left post.

Olivia Labrie came up with two fights in the goal.

Smith Academy 5, Southwick 0 It was an impressive start to the season for new coach Judy Strong and the Falcons.

Charlotte Hennings and Makena Valentine each scored two goals to help Smith Academy clear Southwick.

[Hennings] he had excellent stick skills in the circle, said Strong, a former Olympic champion. And Makena Valentine made a great failure in the second goal. Cat Kokoski, Bailey McCoy, Elena Baranoski, Amanda Novak and [Valentine] closed the midfield and divided the ball beautifully into the attack.

Kokoski had another result from the Falcons, leading 2-0 at halftime.

Hadley Szynal blocked three times to block the Smith Academy network.

FC Tech 2, Belchertown 1 Belchertowns Abigail Olden tied the match at the start of the fourth quarter with a goal, but Visiting Franklin Tech got a late calculation from Kaitlin Trudeau and won 2-1.

Belchertown goalkeeper Eliza Rothstein blocked five times and Orioles had a 16-5 penalty kick.

Holyoke 3, Palmer 0 Good afternoon, Samantha Brennan.

The Holyoke shooter hit all three goals to raise the Purple Knights to a season-opening win of 3-0 from Palmer on Tuesday. Gracie Chesmore created a couple of passes and Brenna Murphy also helped Holyoken score.

Hopkins 6, Gateway 1 Anna Dyjach buried a couple of goals to help the Golden Hawks open with a win.

Mary Styspeck, Helen Vissas, Sadie Cyr and Alayna Bailey also found victory. Tia Fyden and Daisy Venditti got two passes and Lily Ellia fought three times.

Amherst 2, Raja 1 A couple of first-half goals from Hurricanes proved to be the difference, and Amherst began his 2021 campaign, winning 2-1 to host the Redhawks on Tuesday.

Maddie Hockman had both hurricane goals, and Eleanor Jacoby took the pitch.

Makayla Santos had a strike at the borders with the help of Alena Maes-Polan.

Frontiers CC Green and Cadince Wells-Robinson played nine fights together, while Amherst goalkeeper Lily Gleason fought seven.

I thought both teams worked hard and it was a solid game in the first season, said new Amherst coach Don Fraser.

Mahar 2, Easthampton 1 Astha Bernard lowered the winning goal in the final game in the second half and helped host Senators open the season with a win.

Bernard cut the 1-1 draw with a pass from Natalie Apteker. Sienna Moore opened the scoring in the first half, and Bernard saved the pass. Easthampton tied the match four minutes later with Grace Downer’s goal.

Girls with volleyball

Easthampton 3, Belchertown 0 Marlina Devine killed six kills, while Rina Damon and Kayley Downie added five kills to raise the Eagles on Tuesday 2513, 25-13, 25-18.

Skylar Raskevitz boosted the defense with 11 digs and Easthampton setter Delima Fournier shared 19 passes.

Boys soccer

Hopkins 4, Renaissance 0 The Golden Hawks held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but shot three goals in the second half to withdraw from a 4-0 Schmid League win at Hadley on Tuesday.

Alex West got his head on a penalty kick 21 minutes into the game.

Patrick Fitzgibbons opened the scoreboard after 46 minutes and scored in Cyrin’s free kick. Fitzgibbons closed the goal after 61 minutes.

Gallo O’Connell blocked Hopkins’ four shots.

PVCICS 3, item 1 Teddy Scott, Abram Speek and Grahm Arguin found the back of the net to help Dragons take a season-opening 3-1 win over Ware on Tuesday.

Speek assisted Arguins’ goal.

In the finish, Speek defeated three and Gavin Gilburg one in the first half.

Wares Owen McKeever answered his side.

Belchertown 3, Amherst 0 Dominic Mancus found the net and added an entry point when Orioles opened the season with a home win. Kaden Houle and Hunter LePage both scored Carson Boscher and Shay ONeil each gave a pass to Belchertown.

Jacob Chaisson stopped three shots to keep the game clean.

Orioles defeated Amherst 16-3.

Gateway 3, Taconic 2 Landon Richards defeated Ryan Morin as the Gatorsgame winner at Berkshire Community College.

Ayden Audet left the corner kick in the eighth minute to get the Gateway to the top. Shane Cooper was given a chance to change things around.

Gateways Preston Coffey blocked eight shots.
