MINNEAPOLIS The NHL-sized glacier at Ridder Arena had no social distance on a sunny Monday morning. While Minnesota Gophers members have been skating together and training together for months, this day marked their first real practice in 2021-22, for which hopes and expectations could hardly be higher.
Gophers coach Bob Motzko left the ice after the skating was over, noting that he may be the last team in the country to start training because some of the conference’s competitors have been in it for a few weeks now. But it has been normal for Motzkos over the past three seasons at the helm of Minneapolis.
Restoring almost all of the defense, much of their goals, and the nation’s best goalkeeper from the team that won the Big Ten tournament and ended up winning the Frozen Four last season would be enough to excite the Gophers hockey fans, almost all of whom had to watch 24 wins in recent seasons (the highest college hockey) on television due to the pandemic. But a handful of people watching Monday’s rehearsals were held at the women’s hockey pitch, while the newly installed ice at the 3M Arena in Mariucci hardened for another day or two, attracted new friends.
Aside from the injury to goalkeeper Jack LaFontaine, who won the Mike Richter Award for Best Puck Stop of the Nations last spring, you won’t see much first-year goalkeeper Brennan Boynton on the ice this season. The defense looks almost identical to the six or seven guys who usually occupied the blue line last season. But with the transitions Sampo Beach, Scott Reedy and Brannon McManus, the Gophers lost a third of last season’s 117 goals. For this reason, attention is drawn to the new reddish-brown and gold disc converters.
In an ideal world, you can facilitate your role in the new team. For these Gophers, newcomers like Grant Cruikshank, Chaz Lucius, Aaron Huglen and Tristan Broz there is already talk of potential and vital sources of crime in the team planning their first Frozen Four trip after 2014.
It’s definitely painful when we lose guys like Beach, Reedy and McManus who got on the scoreboard and were in big roles for us, said Sammy Walker, a senior striker who is one of the team ‘s three captains. But I think with the guys we’ve come in, and what they can do for us, it’s exciting.
Walker was full of sweat when the team went off the ice after 90 minutes and told reporters that even after skating most days in the summer and at the Da Beauty League, breathing was heavy when the coaches were training for the first time on time.
We need to play our game and play fast, and in order to do that, we need to get fit right now. That’s why the first workout was kind of hard, Walker said of the heavy workout. I don’t think I’ve seen it in four years, but we needed it and it’s just exciting to be back on ice with these guys.
The Gophers will open the season at home on Saturday, Oct. 2 vs. Alaska.
