Valheim’s food rebalancing has already been rebalanced

The big update to Valheim Hearth and Home arrived yesterday, offering players the long-promised rebalancing of the food system. Meals have been modified to focus primarily on increasing stamina or health instead of giving both sizable buffs like they used to.

For example, Snake Stew, which increased both stamina and health by 80 points, was modified to only increase stamina by 5 points. It was a huge adaptation to one of the most useful foods in the game. Combat rebalancing in Hearth and Home also means blocking and parrying now rely on health rather than stamina – the underlying idea was that players would focus on stamina or health boosting foods depending on their fighting style.

But the rebalancing doesn’t seem to have gotten along very well with many Valheim players. If you want to gobble up health-boosting foods, it’ll leave you without a big stamina bar, meaning even just running around will be more of a chore, let alone shooting arrows or swinging an ax. If you stock up on resistance foods, you will limit your ability to block and parry. Some players have enjoyed the new, more challenging system, but many have complained that it takes away a lot of options during combat.

And while people playing co-op may have set up fighting styles like dedicated tanks and archers, solo players have to do it all for themselves. Personally I start with bow attacks and move on to melee, block or parry when I rush. My style of play is basically what I need right now. This is considerably more difficult to do without a uniform balance of health and stamina.

Well, Iron Gate Studios listened to the complaints and released a patch today to rebalance the rebalancing. Most foods have been tweaked – additional health has been added to resistance-based foods, and resistance has been added to health-based foods, which will hopefully mean the new system won’t be as serious a change as it originally was. For example, after the patch, Snake Stew now increases health by 80 and stamina by 26.

Some combat changes are also included in the patch, including a reduction in the amount of stamina required to use bows and arrows. The patch slightly reduces hit points for fuing and fuling shamans (they’re tough customers) and also makes it a bit easier to stagger them.

I suspect we’ll see more tweaks and rebalances in the near future as Iron Gate tries to come up with a formula that makes the food and combat system more challenging and interesting, but not as difficult as it has seemed so far. And hopefully they keep solo players in mind, I think this was harder for them than for groups.

Here are the full patch notes:
