Bitcoin.org site appears to have been hacked for promoting bitcoin giveaways

Bitcoin.org, the oldest bitcoin educational resource site registered in 2008, appears to be compromised for promoting questionable bitcoin giveaways.

Users started noticing and sharing on Twitter early Thursday morning that the Bitcoin.org homepage now displays a pop-up page that asks users to send bitcoin to a dedicated address with the promise that they will receive a amount doubled in return.

Such a method is similar to the typical crypto giveaway scams that plagued Twitter, typically initiated by influential account imposters, including that of Vitalik Buterin and Elon Musk.

Meanwhile, all other Bitcoin.org subpages are not functional because the current home page does not allow clicking on other pages such as the PDF version of the Bitcoin whitepaper.

The direct URL of the Bitcoin whitepaper on Bitcoin.org also displays a “404 Not Found”.

In a response on Twitter to Bitcoin Core contributor Matt Corallo, domain hosting site Namecheap said it has temporarily disabled the Bitcoin.org domain, which is now inaccessible.

The address displayed on the site right now received 0.4 bitcoin worth $ 17,000 in the last hour, but it’s not clear if this came from a victim who fell into the trap.
